College Entrance Exams: An Overview

As students progress through high school, they will be asked to take an exhaustive set of standardized tests. For those intending to pursue college, this list is longer because it includes college entrance exams.

College entrance exams generally are a critical element in the admission application process of four-year institutions throughout the country. These types of standardized tests give colleges a uniform method of evaluating students. Test scores are weighted differently in each college’s admissions decisions. Most colleges provide profiles of their admitted applicants, which contain information regarding ranges in test scores, GPA, class rank, etc.; and this information is usually located on their web site and/or in printed admissions materials. This helps students to better understand the required test score range for admission. Often it is recommended that students take an entrance exam more than once in order to improve his/her chances for a higher score.

Please review the following test types and become familiar with which national exams are applicable  to students in your program. For more detailed information about college entrance exams, download NCAN's Advisor Training Module - Chapter 5.
