NCAN Member Program Benchmarking Project

NCAN Member Benchmarking Project

The NCAN Member Program Benchmarking Project is helping us learn more about the postsecondary enrollment and graduation rates of students who have participated in our member programs.

Three rounds of the Benchmarking Project have been completed, and we are are beginning to observe trends in graduation and retention rates for students who have benefited from NCAN member programs. We are tracking the postsecondary enrollment and 4, 5 and 6-year graduation rates for our students and looking at them in relation to the broader national averages of student outcomes as reported by the National Student Clearinghouse.

During the first year, 24 member programs participated in the Benchmarking project and initial results were extremely promising. In the second year, with 42 member programs participating and more variables being collected, the results were similarly promising. In the third year, 73 programs participated, and while the completion results were mixed, enrollment rate results find NCAN member-served students enrolling at higher rates than their peers. In the second and third years, we were also able to report enrollment and completion rate benchmarks by student-level characteristics like gender, race/ethnicity, and first-generation status.

In all three rounds, the postsecondary enrollment rates of students served by NCAN member program are comparable to the rates of students from high income urban and rural high schools. Six-year completion rates of NCAN students are very close to national benchmarks in the first two rounds but lag further behind in the third round. Both enrollment and completion benchmarks are from studies done by the National Student Clearinghouse.

Round 4 of the Benchmarking Project is currently underway! Stay tuned to NCAN's blog for a number of Benchmarking Breakdowns that will share further findings!

The results from this project are helping to create NCAN enrollment and completion benchmarks to complement the national benchmarks already reported by the NSC. It will enable NCAN member programs to compare their student-level outcomes to a benchmark that better reflects the population of students they serve.

Members that participate in this project will receive a specially designed report that will make it very easy for them to compare their results to both the NCAN and NSC benchmarks.
