Capacity Building in Houston 2013-2017
Although Houston is the fourth largest U.S. city, it ranks 34th in college attainment, and college completion rates are particularly low for Houston's large and growing Hispanic population. To provide more college access and success support services to students and families, the Houston Endowment has partnered with NCAN to help local noprofits understand the most promising practices in the field and improve their use of data to inform their programs.
Outcomes of the project, titled Juntos Logramos/Together We Succeed, will include more students being accepted to postsecondary institutions, better prepared students (more dual enrollment, AP, IB and less remedial coursework required), more students taking standardized entrance exams and improving scores on them, more student completing the FAFSA, and more student enrolling in two or four-year colleges within six months of high school graduation.
In addition, NCAN will develop a training system for those working in community based organizations and offer a menu of high quality outreach/awareness materials for students and their families. Participating organizations include:
