Discovery Education Executive Joins NCAN’s National Board of Directors

Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Discovery Education, will become the 14th member of NCAN’s national board of directors.

The NCAN membership voted to add Mrs. McFarling to the board at its annual meeting, held today at NCAN’s 2016 National Conference in Detroit, Michigan.

Mrs. McFarling oversees global marketing initiatives, including public-private partnerships, events and public affairs activities worldwide for Discovery Education, a global leader in standards-based digital content for grades K-12. She leads the development and execution of marketing initiatives to support educators working to turn their classrooms into digital environments. Mrs. McFarling also partners with cross-sector organizations to lead the development of community engagement, corporate citizenship and educational initiatives to support digital learning in under-resourced areas like STEM, college and workforce readiness, life skills, sustainability, social media literacy, health and wellness, and environmental education. The customized education solutions that her team delivers to educators, students and their families at no cost are aligned to educational standards and include award-winning programs like the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Before moving to her current position, Mrs. McFarling was chief operating officer for Animal Planet and Discovery Kids Media, where her duties included overseeing business operations and administration, and directed the networks’ strategy for brand extension. She has also served as senior vice president of distribution and marketing strategy, where she oversaw Discovery’s distribution relationships and strategy, as well as affiliate marketing for its cable networks nationwide. Her previous posts include vice president, affiliate marketing, and director of TLC sales strategy and planning.

Mrs. McFarling also serves in several industry leadership roles and has won numerous awards. She is a member of the National Education Association Foundation’s Board of Directors, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing, Women in Cable & Telecommunications (WICT), the Association of Cable Communicators and has been named to Leadership Montgomery's 25th Anniversary Class. Mrs. McFarling has also been recognized with the prestigious Vanguard Award for Marketing and the WICT Liberty Award. She is a graduate of the WICT Betsy Magness Leadership Institute fellowship program, and was named to the "Wonder Women" class of television executives in 2016.

A graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder who earned her bachelor's degree in English and journalism, Mrs. McFarling resides with her husband and three children in Bethesda, Maryland.
