Apply Now to Participate in the NCAN Member Benchmarking Project:

November 20, 2014

Recording of overview webinar is now available

NCAN is now accepting applications for member programs to participate in the second year of the NCAN Member Benchmarking Project. Funded by the Kresge Foundation, this project will continue our efforts to develop relevant enrollment and completion benchmarks grounded in outcomes achieved by students that participate in NCAN member programs.

For those of you who missed the NCAN Member Benchmarking Project webinar, the recording is available here and the Powerpoint used during the webinar can be found here. But here’s a quick recap of the important points and how you can participate in this important work:

  • We are again looking at enrollment as well as 4-, 5-, and 6-year completion rates for our students so participating programs will need access to info on their 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014 high school graduates.
  • NCAN will ask participants to submit data on the services/interventions experienced by these students through your program.
  • You need to be a current member of NCAN and have a StudentTracker agreement. If you don’t have a StudentTracker contract, contact us as you may be able to enter into a contract that allows you to run student data at a discounted rate.
  • The Clearinghouse has developed a detailed guide on how to format and submit your data for this project – it’s different from the traditional StudentTracker data submission process.
  • NCAN will have access to student and program level data BUT IT WILL BE COMPLETELY DE-IDENTIFIED. NCAN will receive data from the Clearinghouse and we will be able to see student level records and the program with which they are associated but it will be entirely anonymous – students will not be identified and programs will be identified by a randomly assigned letter.
  • We hope, however, that participating program will share with NCAN which “letter” is theirs. There is no obligation for programs to do this however we want to highlight your good work and outcomes – and we can’t do that unless you tell us who you are!
  • Participating programs will receive easy-to-read summary tables for each high school cohort year with the percent of students who enrolled in postsecondary education, completed a degree, stopped out, and are still enrolled in a postsecondary institution.

And here’s the timeline:

  • By December 1: submit a Letter of Intent and Third Party Authorization for to Sara Melnick. The Third Party Authorization form gives the Clearinghouse permission to share your de-identified data with NCAN for the purposes of this project.
  • Between December 1 and 19: Use the detailed data formatting guide to create and upload your files to the Clearinghouse using the special ftp address that will be supplied to you by the NSC.
  • After December 19: Files will be checked for errors and you’ll have an opportunity to make corrections.
  • In January 2015 all files will be run on the same day through StudentTracker and you’ll get back your detail file.
  • In February 2015, participating programs will receive their summary files by high school cohort year.

We hope that you’ll consider participating in this important work. Please contact Sara if you have any questions.
